In the coming winter season a special exhibition will be on display in the Grote Kerk. The renowned Groningen artist Henk Helmantel shows old and new work in some of the church’s chapels.

Commemorative medal 400 years Synod of Dordt

At the end of the Synod of 1618/1619 all participants received a medal to thank them for their participation in the Synod.

In honour of 400 years of Dordtse Synode, the municipality of Dordrecht issued an art commission for the design of a contemporary Synod medal. The choice fell on the design of Dordrecht artist Theun Okkerse. Okkerse designed a commemorative medal in which past and present come together, inspired by the medal that the participants of the Synod of 1619 received.

Availability

The commemorative bronze medal is for sale in an edition of 500 pieces during ‘Ode aan de Synode’ at the Dordrechts Museum, the Grote Kerk, Het Hof van Nederland and the VVV Dordrecht.

In Memoriam | Jaap van der Ende

Former city carillonneur van Dordrecht, Jaap van der Ende, passed away on September 13th at the age of 90.

Carillonneur in city and country

Jaap van der Ende took lessons at the Dutch Carillon School. From 1953 on he played weekly on Saturday afternoon on the carillon of his hometown Schoonhoven. In 1958 he was appointed city carillonneur of Schoonhoven. In 1966 he was appointed city carillonneur of Dordrecht.
Besides city carillonneur van Schoonhoven and Dordrecht, Van der Ende was also city carillonneur van Woerden, Oudewater and Gouda. He also regularly played carillons in Rijnsburg, Voorschoten, Bergambacht, Zoetermeer and in Amsterdam (Royal Palace Amsterdam).

Cors Monster

Until his retirement in 1993 Van der Ende remained a city carilloneur in Dordrecht. The well-known Dordrecht composer Kors Monster was inspired by Van der Ende to compose a number of works for carillon.

Sneakpreview: Helmantel’s new work

The world-famous painter Henk Helmantel from Groningen visited Dordrecht in June 2018. He was in Dordrecht to collect attrributes in the depot of the Dordrecht Museum to make a still life inspired by the Synod of Dordrecht.

A visit to the Grote Kerk inspired him to record the interior of the Grote Kerk in a painting as well. For this he immediately made a number of sketches.

Westeremden

During ‘Ode to the Synod’ work by Helmantel will be exhibited in the Grote Kerk. Of course, the work inspired by the Synod will not be missing. The church interior of the Grote Kerk, made by Helmantel, will also be on display. He is currently finalising the latter work in his studio in Westeremden, Groningen. Synod of Dordrecht | Dordrecht Stories

The series ‘Dordrecht Stories’ consists of several booklets with stories about the city of Dordrecht and its inhabitants. The Historisch Platform Dordrecht is responsible for its publication. In the meantime 35 volumes have been published.

Dordtse Synode

The first part of the series ‘Dordrecht Stories’ is about the Synod of Dordrecht. The Amsterdam professor, Prof. Dr. F.A. van Lieburg, wrote a booklet worth reading about the backgrounds and consequences of the Synod of Dordrecht, for the Netherlands and Dordrecht.
Recently, partly on the initiative of the Vrienden van de Grote Kerk, an English version of this part of the series was published. Not much later a German translation followed.

European Year of Cultural Heritage: Helmantel exhibition is part of it

Unfortunately, it has had limited attention in the Netherlands, but the European Commission has declared 2018 the European Year of Cultural Heritage. This underlines the importance of our cultural heritage and its preservation.

In November, the month of the opening of the Helmantel exhibition, special attention will be paid to religious heritage. The Helmantel exhibition has therefore been identified as an activity that is part of the European Year of Cultural Heritage.
