Besides photo and film, there are various other forms of visual art, such as sketches, etchings and paintings.
In the days when photo and video cameras were not yet invented, this was the only way to depict the Grote Kerk, but even today the church is frequently visible in paintings and drawings. Pierre-François Basan
Pierre-François Basan was born in Paris in 1723 and died in 1797. His father was a wine merchant. He did not choose this profession but was trained by his mother’s nephew, the engraver Étienne Fessard. Later he took lessons from the engraver Jean Daullé.
Basan is best known as an engraver. Among other things, he is known for his (re)publication of many etchings by Rembrandt.

Johannes Bosboom
Joannes Bosboom was born in The Hague in 1817 and died there at the age of 74. He was trained by the architecture and genre painter Bartholomeus van Hove. After his training he established himself as an independent artist.
Bosboom is best known for his paintings and watercolours of church interiors. He is considered to be one of the most important masters of the Hague School, a distinguished group of artists who lived and worked in The Hague between 1860 and 1890.

Eugène Louis Boudin
Boudin was born in 1824 in Honfleur, a small port town on the Normandy coast. He came from a seafaring family, which could explain his love for seascapes. He himself started a framing business.
In 1847 he closed his shop and decided to become a full-time painter.
He is considered a pioneer of Impressionism. Eugène Boudin died in 1898.

Aelbert Cuyp was born in 1620 in Dordrecht and died in his hometown at the age of 71. He was buried in the Augustijnenkerk.
He was the only child of the Dordrecht landscape painter Jacob Cuyp. He gave Aelbert extensive painting lessons. Aelbert Cuyp developed his own style within the art of painting of landscapes. Characteristic of his style is the warm, southern sunlight that falls over the country.
In 1658 Cuyp married the distinguished, wealthy widow Cornelia Boschman. At that time he had already had an impressive career as a painter behind him.
Because his financial position was now certain, he painted considerably less. His last known works date from 1665.

Jeronymus of Diest (II)
Jeronymus van Diest (II) was a Dutch painter who lived in the 17th century. He was probably born in 1631. His father, the painter Willem van Diest, taught him the trade.
His earliest known work dates from 1648 and his last known work from 1677. After that he disappears from the scene.
His work consists of coat of arms, naval scenes, river landscapes and beach scenes. Van Diest was a follower of Hendrick Dubbels and Jan van Goyen and he was a teacher to his son, Adriaen van Diest.

La Fargue lived from 1729 to 1782. He comes from a family of artists: three brothers and one sister were also painters. Paulus la Fargue’s speciality was initially the making of wallpaper for rooms. Later he specialised in drawing and painting cityscapes and landscapes. His work often serves as an illustration in books.

Jan van Goyen
Jan Josephsz. van Goyen (1596-1656) studied painting in his native Leiden. There he had various teachers, including Willem Gerritsz and Isaac van Swanenburg and the glass painters Cornelis and Hendrick Clock. Later he was apprenticed to the Haarlem landscape painter Esaias van de Velde.
Initially, he worked in a lively style, but from the age of thirty he painted more monochrome. Van Goyen was one of the most productive painters during the 17th century. Some 1200 paintings and 800 drawings by his hand are known.

Johannes Cornelis van der Meer Mohr was born in The Hague in 1821 and died in 1876. He was trained at the ‘first department of the Gravenhaagsche Teekenacademie’. After this he settled as an independent artist in his native city.
Later, after his marriage, he moved to Antwerp, Maastricht and Middelburg. Because his artistry did not yield sufficient results, he also worked as a drawing teacher.
Private collection
Three works are known in which Van der Meer Mohr recorded the interior of the Grote Kerk. The characteristic choir stalls occupy a prominent place in both works.
He produced two oil paintings, both with almost the same image. The best-known version is part of the ARTI gift, offered by the Amsterdam society Arti et Amicitiae. On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the reign of King William III, the artists’ society offered the monarch eight frames containing more than 100 small works of art made by his members.

The Yale Center for British Arts has a number of Turner’s works, but the painting ‘Dordrecht’ is featured and is considered one of his masterpieces. The work of art, Dort or Dordrecht: The Dort packet-boat from Rotterdam becalmed, is considered Turner’s reaction to the work of Aelbert Cuyp, de Maas near Dordrecht, which was exhibited in London in 1715.
